The reason for an idea
Preface

The reason for an idea

Tamas Molnar is a very great friend of mine. He is a superb thoracic surgeon, but also an expert on the history of Thoracic Surgery as well as on history of Europe and Christianity.

I belong to School of Thoracic Surgery of Torino, which was one of the first to develop specific knowledge of this field in Italy, during the 1960s. Also my personal interests outside of work, cover history, politics and religion.

When we met somewhere in Europe, for the European Society for Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS) Annual Meetings or some dedicated ESTS courses, we spent a lot of time talking about the history of Europe, along with its modern geopolitical implications. The idea of this Journal of Thoracic Disease (JTD) supplement on Management of Thoracic Trauma was born at that time. We recognized that the modern General Thoracic Surgery little marginalized this issue, and that in the recent years, only, the interest for post-traumatic chest wall stabilization has been registered in the international scientific community worldwide. Too little for a Thoracic Surgeon, we concluded.

Therefore, we wanted to put together in a single publication, all the major topics about the trauma of the chest, making possible for the readers to find review and easy-to-consult articles and updates on this.

Dr. Molnar and I, are indepted to all the authors who actively contributed to the realization of this JTD supplement, as well as to all the JTD Editorial Board, who first of all believed in this scientific project and then carefully cured it with a meticulous print apparel.
