Oxygen: a powerful drug to handle with care

Irene Coloretti, Martina Tosi, Emanuela Biagioni, Massimo Girardis

Abstract

Acute hypoxemia is common in hospitalized patients as the result of acute and/or chronic diseases that may involve different tissues and organs. Regardless of etiology, generous oxygen supplementation is normally used in hypoxemic patients as the first-line supportive therapy without considering the potential negative effects of exposure to high oxygen concentrations in inspired gases (FiO2).
