High-flow nasal cannula in postextubation management

Lu Chen, Hong-Liang Li, Laurent Brochard

Abstract

Extubation failure, defined as requiring reintubation within 2–7 days after a planned extubation, is associated with remarkably higher mortality rates compared to successfully extubated patients (1,2). Numbers of studies investigated the rate of extubation failure in various populations of patients in intensive care units (ICU), showing that it varied from 10% to 30% of extubated patients (3).
