Dr. Kowalewski is an assistant in Cardiac Surgery Department.

Dr. Kowalewski graduated from Medical Faculty of Collegium Medicum of Nicolaus Copernicus University, Toruń, Poland. In 2014 he completed his PhD thesis: “Gentamicin-collagen sponge reduces the risk of sternal wound infections after heart surgery: Meta-analysis”.

Kowalewski is Academic Editor for the PLOS One Journal. He served as Reviewer for numerous cardiovascular journals. He worked as research fellow in SIRIO-Medicine, an organization funded to pursue systematic research in the field of cardiovascular medicine. He funded Cardiothoracic Research Centre, an international consortium of researchers aiming to design and run clinical trials in cardiothoracic diseases.

Dr. Kowalewski’s research focuses on complications of coronary revascularization; and in particular differences between cardiopulmonary bypass- and off-pump coronary bypass grafting. He has been the co-principal investigator of CANON trial designed to investigate neurocognitive functioning after aortic no-touch OPCABG.

He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers.
