Martin Schweiger, works in Department of Congenital Cardiovascular Surgery, University Children’s Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland. After his medical education at the Karl Franzens University Graz he started his training for general surgery one year after completing his studies. After finishing his training for general surgery he proceeded to training for cardiac surgery. Since the beginning of his training he had opportunities to undertake clinical research in adult and pediatric heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. Within that time he also worked as fellow at the German Heart Institute in Berlin.

After finishing his education for cardiac surgery he is now specializing in congenital cardiovascular surgery in Zurich. It is also there where he started to begin preclinical research in tissue engineering (Tissue engineered vascular grafts). His research activities include: Tissue Engineering, Mechanical Circulatory support (in adults and children), Cardiac transplantation (Rejection monitoring, marginal donors, Immunosuppression, TPV), Cardiac Surgery (Congenital heart surgery), Organ Preservation, Emergency Medicine, Karl Franzens University Graz, Austria (M.D. 2001), Medical University Graz, Austria (Residency 2002 - 2010), Berlin Heart Institute Germany (Fellowship 2010 - 2011), University Children's Hospital Zurich ( 2012 - )
