Professor Rendina was born in Rome in 1958. He obtained his MD Degree and Board Certification in Thoracic Surgery at “Sapienza” University of Rome with commendation. He also received postgraduate training in USA, Japan, France, Germany and UK. He has been Professor and Chairman of Thoracic Surgery at University “ Sapienza” of Rome since 2005 and Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Sant’Andrea Hospital in Rome since 2003. He is also the Chairman of the Department of Clinical and Surgical Translational Medicine of Sapienza University, Rome and a member of the Research Commission of Sapienza University, Rome.
He has been Visiting Professor at Harvard University, Washington University, Pittsburgh, Hong Kong, Osaka, Toronto and many other Universities all over the world.
He was the Past President of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery (2008) and the Associate Editor of the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery from 2003 to 2014. He was the First Italian Author of a Chapter in an American Textbook of Thoracic Surgery (Pearson Thoracic Surgery, 2002) and the First Italian thoracic surgeon member of the AATS (2000) since its foundation in 1917.He is an Active Member of several professional societies: STS, EACTS and ESTS, besides national societies of Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Endoscopy.
He is the Author of over 320 papers in Peer Reviewed Journals (IF> 800; h-Index 36).
The first graduate in the Residency program in Thoracic Surgery under his supervision, performed 1.203 procedures (341 as first operator) and authored 20 papers in peer reviewed journals (IF 56; h-Index 5).
He performed the first Lung Transplant in Italy at the age of 32 years old, on January 11th 1991; since then he performed more than 70 single and bilateral transplantation procedures.
