Dr Steier`s medical education started in Leipzig/Saxony, Germany and lead him over Zurich and the UAB in Alabama to Bavaria and the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. His research interest in respiratory physiology and sleep-disordered breathing triggered a stay in London supported by a long-term research fellowship from the European Respiratory Society (ERS). He has published several papers on sleep-disordered breathing and the respiratory muscles in international peer-reviewed and high-impact factor journals following completion of his PhD thesis under supervision by Professor John Moxham and Professor Michael I Polkey at King`s College Hospital and the Royal Brompton Hospital.
Dr Steier is the successor of Professor Adrian Williams in the Lane Fox Respiratory Unit and the accredited Sleep Disorders Centre at Guy`s & St Thomas` NHS Foundation Trust. He is Senior Lecturer at King`s College London and a member of the Association of ERS Fellows. His current research is focused on novel treatment options for sleep apnoea and patient based biomarkers of respiratory symptoms. Besides his scientific publications he has published a text book about lung function testing and he conducts supporting research in public health for the British Lung Foundation and their sleep apnoea awareness campaign.
