I was born in Arezzo (Italy) April 14, 1963. After receiving a classical education at the gymnasium "F. Petrarca" in Arezzo (1981), I graduated from medical school of the University of Siena in 1989, discussing a thesis entitled "Changes in energy expenditure during and after extracorporeal circulation" and reporting 110/110 cum laude.
From 1989 I received training in Cardio-Thoracic Surgery at the department of “Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Biomedical Technologies” of the University of Siena and I subsequently followed my residency in thoracic surgery at the same university on November 2, 1994 with a thesis entitled "Short and long-term results of bronchoplasty".
From December 1993 to December 1995 I worked as Assistant Professor at the department of “Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Biomedical Technologies”, University of Siena.
January 1, 1996- 2014 I worked as in the Thoracic Surgery Unit at the Siena University Hospital as staff surgeon.
In 1998, for five months, I have been honorary register of thoracic surgery at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield.
2001-2003 I had an assignment of thoracic surgery consultant at Valdarno Hospital “Santa Maria alla Gruccia”.
2000-2010 I’ve been academic visitor at the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department of the Freeman hospital of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
In 2001 I obtained the European Board Certification of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery (FEBTCS).
2004 - July 2014 I worked also, as Director of the Lung Transplantation Program, Siena University Hospital.
From July 2014 I’m Chief of the Thoracic Surgery Unit, Careggi University Hospital, Florence.
July 2014- present I am Consultant at the Lung Transplant Program, University Hospital of Siena.
I am currently (from May 2016) Associate Professor of thoracic surgery at the University of Florence and lecturer at the School of Specialization in general surgery and urgency medicine at the University of Siena and lecturer at the School of Specialization in Thoracic surgery and Hematology at the University of Florence.
I am reviewer of some scientific journals, including the EJCTS. I published many papers, including 66 peer reviewed articles of different fields of thoracic surgery; I’m authors of a monograph (“Pneumothorax”) and three book chapters.
I’m ordinary member of the following scientific societies: Italian Society of Thoracic Surgery (SICT); European Society of Thoracic Surgery (ESTS); European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS); International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT); Italian Society for Organ Transplants (SITO). I’m adviser for an italian lung transplantation program“ (AIRT).My principal research/clinical interest is in the field of advanced tumor surgery, laryngotracheal surgery, lung transplantation, chest wall tumors and minimally invasive lung resection.
