Dr. Daniel Hernandez-Vaquero was born in Aviles, Spain. At 17 years old he began the Degree in Medicine in the University of Oviedo. He finished this degree at 23. He started the residency program of cardiac surgery in the Department of Cardiac Surgery of the Central University Hospital of Asturias, Spain. This Department, with 1000 cardiac surgery operations/year, has the highest volume of patients of all the country. During his residency he published his first original article as first author in a high impact factor journal and developed his philosophical thesis, which was defended at the age of 28. It was evaluated as “outstanding cum laude”.
He started working as staff in the Cardiac Surgery Department of the Central University Hospital of Asturias, Spain in 2013. Since then, He has performed more than 400 major cardiac surgery operations as main surgeon. With 33 years old, he has published as first author more than 20 articles in the most prestigious journals of the sector. He is the main investigator of a prestigious public grant (“Health Research Project”) from the “Instituto de Salud Carlos III” for the years 2016-2018. He is commissioned to mark the lines of research within our Department and act as reviewer in the most important journals of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the world. His research interests include extensively Cardiac Surgery, Aortic/Mitral/Tricuspid Valve Repair/Replacement, Coronary Artery By-pass Grafting, Hybrid Cardiac Surgery, Risk Scores in Cardiac Surgery, Frailty in Cardiac Surgery, Aortic Surgery, and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.
