Result of 2017 Masters of Thoracic Surgery - Video-assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery Video Contest

2017 Masters of Thoracic Surgery- Video-assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery Video Contest was held by AME publishing company and sponsored by Medtronic. This year, the contest is also held on an international background. There were 34 videos in total for evaluation. All the videos for the contest were judged on the basis of how effective the videos are in promoting VATS surgery’s techniques. Specifically, video clips were assessed based on the following 3-point criteria.

1) Originality (30 %)
2) Quality of video (30 %)
3) Educational values of video demonstration (40%)

The contest here comes to a conclusion with the final scoring from a panel of judges. There are seven winners this year. All prized videos will be published in Journal of Thoracic Disease (JTD: https://jtd.amegroups. com) later.

  Panel of Judges:

1. Luca Bertolaccini, MD, PhD, FCCP

Dr. Bertolaccini currently works at Thoracic Surgery-AUSL Romagna, Santa Maria delle Croci Teaching Hospital, Ravenna.


2. Jin-Shing Chen, MD, PhD

Dr. Jin-Shing Chen is the Professor of Department of Surgery at the National Taiwan University. Mong-Wei Lin, Dr. Chen’s colleague, worked with Dr. Chen to rate all the videos together.


3. Jaroslaw Kuzdzal, MD

Prof. Jaroslaw Kuzdzal is the Head of the General Thoracic Service in the John Paul Hospital in Cracow and of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Jagiellonian University.


4. Virginia R Litle, MD

Dr. Virginia R Litle is the Professor of Surgery, Boston University School of Medicine.


5. Calvin Sze Hang Ng, BSc(Hons), MBBS(Hons), MD(Res)(Lond), FRCSEd(CTh), FCSHK, FHKAM(Surg), FCCP

Dr Ng is an Associate Professor in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Prince of Wales Hospital, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.


6. Meinoshin Okumura, MD, PhD

Dr. Okumura is the Professor of Department of General Thoracic Surgery, Osaka University, Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University Hospital.


7. Federico Rea, MD

Prof. Federico Rea is the chief of Thoracic Surgery and Lung Transplantation Unit at Padua University Hospital. Samuele Nicotra, Dr. Rea’s colleague, worked with Dr. Rea to rate all the videos together.


8. Pascal Thomas, MD

Dr. Thomas currently work at North Hospital, Aix-Marseille University and Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Marseille, Marseille, France. He was the President of the French Society of Thoracic and CardioVascular Surgery(2015).


9. Takashi Suda, MD

Dr. Takashi Suda is currently a Professor in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Fujita Health University located in Toyoake, Japan.


10. Scott J. Swanson, MD

Dr. Scott J. Swanson is a thoracic surgeon and director of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). He is chief surgical officer of Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center and is a professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School.
