AB 79. Polysomnographic parameters before and after high fat meal

Background: Food is known to control several sleep parameters and modulates the respiratory capacity.

Patients and Methods: Twenty patients with known obstructive sleep apnea (n=20) were chosen from our clinic to participate in the study. Patients age was between 28 and 69 with a mean of 45 and their BMI was between 27, 5-55, 9. Also all patients had AHI score more than 30 and were healthy subjects. All patients were diagnosed with ΟSA (system ALICE 4 respitronics) at least 6 months prior to the second polysomnography. In the second sleep study all patients consumed a meal consisting of 20% protein, 20% fat and 60% carbohydrates in total the meal had 2,000 kcal. The patients underwent and a third sleep study in which they consumed a meal consisting 10% protein, 70% fat and 20% carbohydrates in total the meal also had 2,000 kcal. In the second and third polysomnography patients consumed their meal 30 min prior to the study.

Results: On the contrary in the first sleep study none of the patients had eaten before the study test. The comparison between the second and the third polysomnography showed that the duration of total sleep time was the same and the N-REM and REM stages were equally distributed and did not statistically differ.

Conclusions: The major difference was observed in the AHI score per hour and the absolute number of apnea episodes were significally increased.
